Showy Northeast Native Wildflower Seed Packet
One seed packet covers approximately 20-40 square feet of garden. Some of the flower seeds are tiny, it spreads further than it looks like it would. Keep an eye out.
This seed mix contains no decorative grasses, only native wildflowers.
Note some of our native pollinators need native grasses as habitat, but this mix is for situations where you don't want grasses, you want to add more flowers to an existing garden, or you want precise control of grass placement.
Full sun to part shade, dry to moist soil.
Attracts hummingbirds, butterflies, and other pollinators, as well as songbirds.
Where possible, seeds are local ecotypes.
Certain species in this mix can benefit from cowpea-peanut-lespedeza nitrogen fixing bacteria inoculant. They will still grow fine without it, but if you use the inoculant in poor nutrient soil, legumes (patridge pea and lespedeza) will become symbiotic with it to make nitrogen fertilizer and improve your soil quality.
Planting Instructions: Scatter seeds and gently press into soil, roll over them, or gently step on them to secure into place, and optionally cover with a light layer of straw. Alternate option cover in 1/4" of soil without pressing seeds into soil. Optional compost. Water when dry. Do not stratify.
Mix Includes:
- Purple Coneflower - Echinacea purpurea* *Native to OH, ON, NC not MD but not invasive, long bloom time, and very beneficial to birds and pollinators, while surviving dry to flooding tough conditions. The native Echinacea laevigata has been wiped out of Maryland due to human activity so long ago it's no longer classified as even being native to MD anymore. If we could get its seeds in bulk we would. This is the next best thing.
